FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.
  • What is electroforming?

The process of electroforming is similar to electroplating. Electroplating is plating a more noble metal onto a less noble metal to make it more valuable, such as when something is gold plated.  In electroforming, we plate a thick layer of the purest copper over a non-metal object by making it conductive and placing it in a chemical bath.  The chemical bath dissolves the pure copper and a small amount of electricity moves the now free floating copper to the conductive object to plate it micron by micron until it is thick and structurally sound. Find an object in your immediate surroundings. Is it inanimate? If so, then it can be electroformed!

  • Why does copper turn my skin green?

The moisture, minerals, and oil in your skin create a chemical reaction when in contact with copper that causes it to oxidize, which can leave a non-permanent green stain on the skin.  This is normal and natural copper behavior.  If you do not like it and would like to try and prevent it, you can seal the ring in a clear varnish such as nail polish.  This is not permanent, and will need to be repeated periodically.  Bear in mind some varnish will also yellow over time.

  • Is copper toxic?

Not in this context.  Copper is only toxic in large enough quantities when ingested or inhaled. Copper has antimicrobial properties.  Many believe it has metaphysical healing properties to help relieve joint pain, and improve the body’s ability to repair itself!

  • How do I care for my jewelry?

Please exercise due care to extend the life of your piece. We recommend that copper pieces are removed before handwashing, showering, bathing and swimming, and that they be stored in a dry place, or in an air-tight bag or container.  Reusing silica gel packets that come with shoes or other dry goods is encouraged to reduce moisture and darkening. The antiqued patina that develops is part of copper’s charm, as it behaves as a living metal that will change over time due to exposure to natural oils, moisture, and deposits of trace minerals within the environment. This natural process is something we hope you can appreciate.

You can restore the luster on the surface using a simple paste of lemon juice and salt, any store-bought copper cleaner, a polishing cloth, or a small piece of superfine 000 steel wool. These processes may change the appearance of the patina, so begin carefully with the back of the piece to see how it reacts.  Any questions regarding restoring shine, patina, or care please contact us.
